REsearch/Paper Work

As with all of my work for the Brownville Village Theatre, because the season ran as rotating rep the lights positions/gels couldn't be tailored for one production. All of the focusing had to work for each production because there wasn't enough time in between some shows to change a whole lot. Picking a basic warm/cool gel for each of the lights and then worrying about specials and which show was using them was the biggest challenge I had to overcome.
For Beware the House on Haunted Hill!  I utilized 3 special lights. The first was used as comical lightning flash (utilizing a lightning shaped gobo and yellow gel) which had to be re-circuited every performance because that light shared a circuit with the disco ball focused light in Two Witches, No Waiting. Similarly, the opening light look for Pritchard's monologue used two glass gobos and a blue and green gel to set the audience up for the spoofy nature of the show. These same two lights were also used in Two Witches, No Waiting  for a specific magical look. The focus didn't change, but the green gel changed to a light pink to fit the color theme of the show.
One of the LED lights changed it's focus to point straight down onto the pit of acid, which was the same focus I used in When Grandma Goes for the rocking chair. Because this light was only used in three of the five productions, the focus could be changed back swiftly when needed. Finally, a small fog machine was placed by the pit of acid to for the comedic moments like Annabelle "melting" near the end of the show.

Boards: Elation Stage Setter 24 and ROCKFORCE 192

This was my setup as the board op for "Beware the House on Haunted Hill!" I was in charge of running the two light boards (stated above) and the sound computer. The speaker system had to be manually switched if the sound designer wanted the sound to only come from the backstage speakers. You can find a sped up sequence of me running the board during the most queued sequence of the show in ACT 2 on my Instagram! The only view I had of the stage was through a mirror that could be adjusted.

The House on Haunted Hill starring Vincent Price

The black and white film was the starting point for my research. There were multiple locations that all needed to have different feels to them like the cellar being a bit darker moodier were as the drawing room was brighter.

Because it is black and white, the colors came out of traditional horror tropes like the green acid/wine pit, or the blood red when Nora stabs Fredrick. The scenes in which the lights were turn off a blue wash and very light warm tone blended well for visibility and tone combined with each character having working flashlights. These primary colors also emphasized the shadows I was trying to resemble from the movie.

Replicating this opening moment from the movie by using glass gobos with a blue and green gel overtop to really make the actor's face pop.
